## Character Progression & Timeline State Resolution
- **Progression Rule**: Characters level up and evolve across story chapters. In `characters.json`, `llms-full.txt`, and individual character markdown profiles (`/characters/<id>.md`), progression is structured as chronological milestone steps (`timeline`).
- **Lookup Logic**: For any chapter `N`, a character's canonical state (level, rank, class path) is the most recent milestone where `chapter <= N`.
- **Example**: Valaciel at Chapter 1 is Level 1 (Rank E). At Chapter 53, he reaches Level 25 (Rank D). At Chapter 66, he reaches Level 27. Therefore, at Chapter 65, Valaciel is Level 25, Rank D (Thief).
